ARTIST INTERVIEW: NobodySpcl_

Β  This weeks greatest is NobodySpcl_ an artist who I came across through Instagram. I can’t lie, I get nervous when I see a SoundCloud link in someone’s bio. From inaudible lyrics, catchy beats, and repeatedly shouting your name on a track. Today’s aspiring artists don’t have much for me in the lane of music that provokes thought.
Β  Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I clicked the link in his bio. Particularly his 2017 EP,A Sound by nobdyspcl . The EP is an easy listen, it’s a little over 15 minutes long. I appreciate the calm tempo of the music along with the different themes on the EP. Nobdyspcl, took time out of his day to answer questions regarding him and his music.

Β  How did you come across the stage name Nobdyspcl?

Β  I remember IΒ  was making one of my songs called “Round In Circles” & I said “Who’s Callin? Nobody special….” I was like damn that sounds cool. It fits who I am perfectly because I know I’m a special person I guess but usually, I downplay myself around others, I guess I’m just extremely humble.

Β  What is your process for creating music?

Β  I remember when I was in fifth grade they took recess away from my class. During that time my friends and I would rap corny rhymes or even steal someone’s raps and battle each other. I didn’t want to get embarrassed so I started writing all the time and it just stuck with me.

Β  How you begin to make an EP or song?

Β  Before I make music I already have a couple of lines in my head for a verse. After that I go into a machine software, I find some smooth drums, I find some keys, and then I create a chill loop. I throw that on repeat & my pen starts moving, might smoke or drink something but that’s if I’m in the mood.

Β  Describe your upbringing?

Β  My upbringing was pretty chill, growing up in Prince George’s County you peep the good & the bad all in one. I had a couple of friends because I peeped early what I didn’t want to become and what I didn’t want around me. Every summer, I went to Lancaster County Virginia, I hated it but now I appreciate the country because it made me calm & allowed me to have clear thoughts about my future at an early age.Β Once my friends & I started making music that’s pretty much all I cared about.

Β  I played football for a few years but was cut from tryouts in High School because another player and I mixed up our cleats. I played a game Chucks through the rain & mud. The coach said I was irresponsible, after that I to become a full time rapper now.

Β Have you always kept it as real in your life as your song?

Β  Not always but I am beginning to. Telling the audience things I never actually say out loud or things that have been on my chest or mind for a long time is therapy for me. My tracks are like pages from a diary that I don’t want anyone to read but at the same time, I love when people can relate to my music.

Β Β What’s your goal for you?

Β  When it comes to music, I just want to become the best I can be. Challenging myself along the way and see what I can do. I am my worst critic and the only person I have to prove anything to, It’ll be a long road but I know when I can say ‘Damn I’m Impressed’ about myself then I know I’ve made it.

LYRICAL ANALYSIS

These lyrics are from A Sound by Nobdyspcl.Β Β My anlaysis and His explanation.Β

Song: Round in Circles

Lyric: “Don’t nothing mean shit, so I just rap?”

Analysis: Life has been so pointless, so just rap. Through systematic oppression, covert and overt oppression. Why not just do what I love to do?

Explanation: I believe that no one knows the true meaning of anything its all a big mystery no matter how many people try to put names on things and give them meanings. If you didn’t create itΒ with your hands you can maybe give a scientific answer to how this came about but you honestly don’t know. So I’m cool with the fact that I don’t know & I just rap because that’s what I do know.

Song:Clap Once

Lyric:Β “My Life Is like a Get Out challenge with Bad Balance.”

Analysis:Β  First thought that comes to mind is this scene. You feel like things are coming at you in an odd manner?

Explanation: I feel like I’m always running from something, trying to get away from my past. Even things or people that kill my vibe & every time I am close to getting away I trip & fall or I’m stuck running in place.

Song: Water Me

Lyric: “If I can go and find the seeds maybe you can Water me?”

“Even when I hit that thrift, I’m the freshest in the land.”

“Don’t need those designer brands.”

“Ancestors doing back flips, all they kids junky slaves.”

Analysis:Β Such a great song. Could you explain what it means to you and how you came to write it.

Explanation: It’s crazy because I was stuck on this question for a while and really tried to decipher my own music! I’m not gonna lie I just write bro, then when I actually listen to what I recorded “I’m like Damn!” I said that. I don’t put much thought into it, I just let my pen move & do me. So I guess the song is just how I was feeling at the moment.
