As you know, I have written four stories about African Americans’ experiences in the alternative music scene. I believe that representation is imperative in all mediums. That being said, this is Sean Holmes story, he is 21 years old, and has been to so many shows that he has lost count. So read on and rock on!
How did you get into punk/alt music?
It started when I was really young like 4th grade and my best friend showed me songs he thought was dope.
Do you remember your first time hearing a song from this genre?
I most definitely do remember my first time heading a song from this genre. It was faint by Linkin Park.

Which band do you resonate with the most and why!?
The band I resonate with the most would have to be three days grace with Adam Gontier.

How did/do your family/friends feel about you like the genre?
My immediate family just kind of accepted how I am. My friends, distant relatives, and associates, however, didn’t really understand me.

What have you gained by listening to this genre of music?
For me, I gained a sense of identity of who I want to be.
To you, what is the biggest misconception about this genre of music?
The biggest misconception that I think is that people think that alternative styles of music are for whites.
What was your first live show and how was it?
My first show was Linkin Park. It was absolutely amazing I didn’t feel out of place.
How was the energy?
The energy was hitting everyone. There were some intense head bangs and tears.
When did you get in your first pit and what show/band/song was playing?
The first pit I got in was at the black castle and the band that was playing was a happy drunk cartel.
Have you ever felt out of place at a show?
All the time because I’m usually the only black guy

Do you write or make music?
Yes, I play bass and do backing vocals for my band Fall Out Of Line. I write most of the songs.

Linkin Park, Slipknot, Flyleaf, Evanescence, Attila, Breaking Benjamin.
Have you seen an increase in the number of black people at shows, since you went to your first one?
Yes I usually see one or two other black people.
Were you ever nervous that you’d be the only black person at a show?
Yes and I typically still am.
Latest show that you’ve been to?
Latest show I been to was my own that I played in Long Beach CA.
