THE DMV DUO: 1AMVIBES

“Our sound is what the mind tells the heart to say.”

Today’s world is filled with, no oversaturated with an unprecedented amount of music like we have never seen before. I am sure that either you or someone you know can name five people who are aspiring musical artists. With music streaming being the go-to way to find new music and artists, it can be a bit overwhelming. Apple Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, iTunes, or Youtube.

Spotify with its curated lists specially made for you is too much for me at times. I just want to organically find my music and find some common ground with the artist.  That is glad why I was referred to listen to 1AMVIBES,  a local group from Prince George’s County composed of Quincy and Julio who’s music is nothing short of personal and heartfelt. They fall between the intersection of contemporary trap soul, rap, and R&B.

The two of them have been friends for years, they met each other in the ninth grade and have since grown to be the best of friends. “We’ve been friends for years and bonded over our mutual love and respect for rap.” The duo recalls ghostwriting and songwriting for other artists before they formed 1AMVIBES.

The name 1AMVIBES comes from the groups twilight hour style of writing. “Most of our songwriting and freestyles were late at night or early morning so it was only right.” The two have been rapping for years and created their own pocket. Much like 1 AM, their music brings a variety of feelings, from in your feelings to hype me up.  “Our sound is what the mind tells the heart to say.”

You two have created three volumes of work, titled Long Time No See. Could you describe the volumes to us?

LTNS-FINAL 2

Well, the first project, possibly the most organic. Because we just freestyled those songs and chose what we wanted after recording. That’s before we realized our writing process would consist of that.

Vol.-2

The second volume, the same process but we had an intended goal and what we wanted to say as far as what we didn’t say on the first one. On the second project, we wanted people to feel excitement, disgust, pain and all the emotions you feel when you go through a breakup and you see that person after a while.

Vol. 3

Now for the third volume, we wanted to paint the picture of how the relationship dissolved, how to get closure and how to find that feeling of happiness after it’s all said and done. We wanted to paint an accurate picture so we split the EP up into acts so the first act you go through the denial phase, the false sense of happiness. The second act is the grief stage like where you miss the person, where it’s hard to find closure but you do somehow some way.

Then the third act is the last two songs where you’ve gotten closure and you’re trying to get back to feeling like yourself. Every project fed off the last one, which is why we made it a trilogy because the most interesting way to tell a story is from the beginning to the end, go to the middle talk then go to the beginning.
