Finally, we’re getting into what this blog was made for, and with none other than an interview from G Suave Da Poet. You may be asking yourself who is G Suave? G Suave is a DMV rapper/ spoken word artists from Prince George’s County. G Suave has been writing since the age of eight.” I used to write fictional stories in class because I wanted to be an actor.” It was not until 2009 that he began to take his writing more seriously. In 2011 G Suave added Da Poet to this name, a choice that he made after joining a poetry club that challenged him to honest in his writing and inspired him to change his writing style.

The first time that I heard G Suave’s music was his AHK LAND FREESTYLE. AHK LAND FREESTYLE is G Suave freestyling consistently for almost seven minutes over various samples. In this freestyle, G Sauve addresses the difficulty of getting into the music industry, his fear of falling in love, and making the decision to leave school to pursue a music career. This track displays G Sauve’s versatility, quick thinking ability, and his depth as an artist. A skill set that is lost amongst most of today’s upcoming music artist.

In 2014, G Suave released his first mixtape, Half Past Dead, a conceptual mixtape that takes the listener through the stages of love with its fifteen tracks. Half Past Dead takes the listener on a journey through the stages of heartbreak from G Suave’s perspective. One thing to take about Half Past Dead is its theatrical elements, these elements help to push along the stories of the mixtape. “Telling stories is something I love and didn’t notice that most of my songs told a story compared to a typical song filled with punchlines.” Listeners should know that G Suave’s music, regardless of the track is always a story. A refreshing and enjoyable change that sets him apart from other artists. The rest of our interview will be listed below, track for track.

Track 1 8 Stages Of A Broken Heart 101 Intro

  • A skit introducing the theme of the album- the experience of heartbreak
  • Classroom setting it
  • 8 Stages of a Broken Heart 101 course to recover
  • Infatuation, too comfortable, turn, heartbreak, denial, regret

Track 2 You Don’t Know My Name/infatuation

  • During this song which stage of the process were you feeling?

  • This was the infatuation stage the reason why I chose the beat is that if you listen to you don’t know my name by Alicia Keys it’s about her having a crush/infatuation on her customer.

  • Did this relationship work out?

  • This relationship didn’t work out because this is the side chick who later on breaks his heart

  • Was this song about a relationship or liking someone from afar and being afraid to speak?

  • Yea it was him admiring her from a distance but he ends up getting her.

Track 3 Don’t You Gotta Girl skit

  • Are you usually scared to approach girls who you like?

  • In a way, I guess you can say I am. I normally play it safe but if I feel like my chances are 80% or higher I just go for it.

G SUAVE I’M SORRY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPf5Hwh5qXQ

Track 4 IM SORRY prod (VICgotemBouncin )

  • I’M sorry has the most spins/views why do you think that is?

  • I feel like that’s the rawest song on the tape it has the most emotion behind it to me. I felt like it was also the banger on the tape the other tracks were soulful r&b tracks. That’s why I chose to make a music video for it.

  • Is this project about the different stages of love?

  • This wasn’t a stage this was just a letter leaving my ex and telling her I’m sorry but this is how it is accepted it

Track 5 Unconditional skit

  • Lovin ass nigga? Is that a good thing/ bad?
  • At the time

  • I felt like it was a good thing. This is the stage where you’re falling in love. Everything feels so right and you make wild choices without caring about that consequences.

Track 7 Word Around Town skit

  • What brought about the old school harmony for this track?

  • I love doo-wop and I wanted to make a modern-day doo-wop type of track. I didn’t want a typical beat I wanted to make it from scratch. So I got my boy Manny well to make it for me

  • When do you know that you’re too comfortable in a relationship? Is there such a thing?

I feel like when you don’t go out your way to make an effort like you did before. When you first meet someone you wanna look good and you’re on your best behavior but after a while, you just have a nonchalant type of attitude and you go around looking like or saying whatever.

  • What was the inspiration behind this song

This was used as the stage to show the switch up its past the honeymoon stage at this point

GS2

Track 8 Comfortable ft Mannywellz x Bemisoul

  • Is love blind?

  • I do feel as though love is blind because love can make you appreciate the most unattractive person. It alters your sense of reality and you start believing in things that may not be there

  • Who are you calling in the turn? I am calling the side chick and at this point, she changed. That’s why it’s called the turn. She got too comfortable and is showing her True colors.

  • Broke your heart?  The heartbreak wasn’t until first class heartbreak
  • Coming to the realization that this may be over
  • -Denial and denial was lusting for pain. It was so unbearable I didn’t want to believe it and questioned everything
  • You see

Track 9 Momma Told Me skit

  • You have a lot of influencer’s telling you to stay with this love. Even your mother! Why did you stay?
  • The people telling me to leave were the voices in my head even my mother but I wanted to show that no matter how many people got your back and tell you don’t do something love can make you do the dumbest shit. Its him being too  whipped and In love to see that she’s no good

Track 10 The Turn – prod by j havis

-Even this intro!

-Do you always love this hard or was there something special about this girl? When I love I love hard I’mma very affectionate person. I love showering my significant other with gifts.

-Is this the point where you started to realize that this wasn’t the love for you?

I realized it at the turn that I sign up for something that I wasn’t ready for. I didn’t read the fine print

-does the perspective change in this song?

Yea I now know she is a no good and used me

This joint hits it sounds cathartic.

How did you feel once you finished this track?

This was the most polished track I love it. It has a typical song format and was a standout song.

Track 11 1St Class Heart Break Remastered

-The first thought that comes to mind: Are you giving up on love on this track? This is denial I’m so heartbroken that I question love and everything that came with it

*I’m rocking with this joint*

It’s real smooth, unlike heartbreak I like the contrast.

Track 12 Lusting For Pain ft Bemisoulvv

-These songs sound like after the heartbreak. The love is blind phase to the realization that it is, denying everyone who is against you, to realization. I like this transition.

  • Do you sample artists music? Yea I love samples from Maroon 5 to Miguel you can hear it in my new music
  • Do you make it with a group of musicians? Depends sometimes I have a band help with it other times it’s just me and my Producer
  • Do you play an instrument? I wish I used to play the sax but that was back in the day the voice

  • on here is soulful and real. How did you decide on who to collab with on this project? I normally want someone who can make me say damn after hearing them. I love being able to feel like this person is cold and I want that same
  • Vibe to rub off on my music so that artist has to be able to have that

Track 13 suppressed memories

[if you had to choose one song to break down the lyrics to do on genius which song would it be & why?

Good question either lane or the turn I feel like both of them had a lot of metaphors/over the heads a lot of people missed. Those are my favorite tracks on the project for sure.

Who do you respect most in the industry?

Kanye West he’s the most influential artist of my time. He’s gotten me through depression and heartbreak. He has a song for about every emotion.

Track 14 Broken Promises

-You’re very persistent in your pursuit of love.

how has being cheated on affected the way you approach relationships

I haven’t been in a relationship in the last 4 years because of it. It affected the way I think I thought all girls cheat and I kinda expected it. I became numb and I didn’t believe in true love anymore I felt that everything was a lie. I ruined a couple of good situations after due to my own insecurities.

-THIS SAMPLE WAS USED ON THE GET DOWN.

Track 15 Murder She Wrote skit

  • would you say that you’re theatrical?

  • I’m very theatrical I use to take drama courses. I love acting and I found a way to incorporate that into my music. Telling stories is something I love and didn’t notice that most of my songs told a story compared to a typical song filled with punchlines.

  • Did this story happen?

  • This story didn’t actually happen but it was inspired by my last relationship. This is how I felt on the inside I wanted to get her back in the worst way. So track 15 showcases the get back. The whole project however was a guy who had a good girl but did her dirty for a side chick and the side chick ended up doing him dirty. I wanted to show how karma comes back to bite you.

  • Are all of the skits real life conversations that you have had?

  • Most of them are but I used the skits to show the voices that were talking to him in his head. It’s him over thinking about the decisions he’s made and what people might say or think about him.

  • This joint is horrifying but is accurate of how people feel after you mess with their heart.
